Survivor's Stories

Moshe

When World War Two started, Moshe ran away to the woods and hid with others. When he returned, he realized that his family had been killed by the Nazis. He moved to Israel alone and without money, rebuilt his life.

Bracha

When she was 6, Bracha and her parents were taken away and put into a concentration camp. Luckily, a Rumanian Officer found them a Russian family to live with. There were five people in a small room, and Bracha's father went to work to earn money to feed their family which sometimes had to eat potato peels, and to pay the family they were staying with. Bracha was sick a lot because she had little to eat. She was weak and almost didn't survive. When she was 11, the Germans were defeated and Bracha and her family were freed along with all the other Jews who survived. When they returned to their house, they didn't find any property that they had before and they had to rebuild their lives.

The Holocaust Facts

1. Near the end of the war, when the German army was beginning to collapse, Allied Armies began to close in on the Germans.
2. The Germans frantically moved out the prisoners to Germany.
3. First the prisoners went by train, then they went on long walks, now known as Death Marches. Prisoners were forced to march long distances in bitter cold.
4. On January 30, 1933, Adoff Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany, ending German democracy. In his first few months of chancellorship, Hitler made a policy of synchronization, which made all organizations and clubs be forced "into line" with Nazi goals and putting them under Nazi leadership. By mid-July 1933, the Nazi party was the only political party permitted in Germany.
5. During the war, Hitler decided to "eliminate" the incredibly ill or handicapped. Many Germans didn't want to be reminded of the people who did not "match up" to their concept of a "master race". The Germans called this the "T-4" or "euthanasia" program.
6. At the beginning of World War 2, Hitler decided it was the perfect time to target the mentally ill or handicapped.
7. Some Jews did survive the "Final Solution", which was the Germans plan to annihilate the Jews by escaping or hiding in Europe.
8. Most people who weren't Jews didn't aid or go against Hitler and his army.
9. Very few people helped the Jews escape. They did it with tremendous risk. In lots of places, homing Jews was punished by death.
10. On November 9, 1938, the Germans bombed the Jews, which appeared to be unplanned. In ONLY two days, over 7,000 Jewish run businesses were trashed.

Here is a German girl who is shocked by the bodies on the road beside her. These bodies were laid by the Nazis to show the work of their leaders. They laid over 800 slave workers bodies on the road.

This is the leader of the Nazis, Adolf Hitler. He was a very cruel man, and when the war was over, he and his wife actually killed themselves to prove they wouldn't surrender.

Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo

safe-haven-the-warsaw-zoo.jpg
Safe Haven The Warsaw Zoo was an overall very sad movie. I learned that if you were over six months you were an adult and you didn't get any milk. I also learned that they killed animals including the ones in the Warsaw Zoo, which led the owner to letting Jews hide in there.

Paper Clips

Paper clips represent perished Jews. In the movie Paper Clips, Middle School kids are inspired by their teachers to collect 6,000,000 paper clips to represent the kids in the Holocaust, but they collected WAY too many, so they stored the leftovers in a rail cart that was used to transport Jews during the Holocaust.

My Feelings

The Holocaust is very interesting and sad. I love learning about it because when I first found out about it, I had so many questions and I am happy to report they have all been answered.
